Authenticity and Sovereignty: Allowing Others Their Journey

Reflection - Authenticity and Sovereignty: Allowing Others Their Journey

The Beauty of Sovereignty: Honoring Every Path

Have you ever found yourself watching someone make a choice and thinking, “That’s not the best decision”? It’s a familiar feeling, especially when we care about someone or see the potential they may not yet recognize in themselves. It’s human to want what we believe is best for others. But what if every choice—even the ones we don’t agree with—holds a purpose we cannot yet see?

This is where the beauty of sovereignty comes in. Sovereignty is the gift we all share: the ability to choose our own paths. It’s not just about freedom; it’s about honoring the journey each soul has chosen, even when it looks different from ours.

The Power of Choice

At the heart of authenticity is the power to choose. Every decision we make—big or small—reflects where we are on our journey. These choices are shaped by our experiences, lessons, and the growth our soul seeks in this lifetime.

Sometimes, people make choices that seem limiting or even harmful from the outside. But what appears as a misstep to us may be a vital step for them. A challenging relationship, a difficult career path, or even a seemingly misguided belief system can hold lessons and opportunities that their soul needs to grow. Sovereignty allows each of us to walk this path in our own way, at our own pace.

Why Allowing Freedom Matters

Just as we cherish our own freedom to make decisions, we must extend the same grace to others. Authenticity means honoring not only our truth but the truth of others, even when it looks different from what we would choose.

Here’s the thing: Growth is not one-size-fits-all. What works for you may not work for someone else. And what feels ‘wrong’ or misaligned to you might be the very thing that helps another person find clarity, strength, or transformation. Their path may not make sense to you, but it doesn’t have to—it’s their journey, not yours.

Lessons from Contrast

Growth often comes through contrast. Choosing something that doesn’t work out—a job that feels stifling, a relationship that ends painfully, or a belief system that eventually feels too small—can lead to profound self-awareness. These experiences aren’t wasted; they’re part of the process of becoming.

Consider this: Every time you’ve learned what doesn’t work for you, it’s brought you closer to what does. The same is true for others. Even when their choices seem counterproductive, those decisions may be leading them to a deeper understanding of themselves.

Balancing Judgment with Compassion

It’s natural to feel discomfort when we see someone make choices we don’t agree with. Maybe we feel sadness because we see their potential, or frustration because we want better for them. But that discomfort can be a teacher. It’s an invitation to practice compassion and trust.

What if their choice, no matter how puzzling, is exactly what they need in this moment? What if their path, even with its detours and challenges, is perfectly designed for their growth? By honoring their sovereignty, we release the need to control or judge, and instead hold space for them to evolve in their own time.

The Gift of Trust

Trusting someone’s journey doesn’t mean agreeing with their choices. It means recognizing that their path belongs to them, just as yours belongs to you. It’s about letting go of the need to ‘fix’ or ‘correct’ and embracing the understanding that every path contributes to the greater whole.

When we honor another person’s sovereignty, we deepen our own. We’re reminded that we, too, are free to choose our paths without fear of judgment. It’s a mutual exchange of grace—an acknowledgment that all of us are walking our unique journeys, learning, growing, and contributing in our own ways.

An Invitation to Reflect

The next time you find yourself questioning someone’s choices, pause and ask:

“What if this is exactly what they need right now?”

What if their choice, no matter how it looks to you, is part of a bigger picture you can’t yet see? By extending the same grace we desire for ourselves, we honor not just their journey but the interconnectedness of all paths.

Sovereignty isn’t just about choosing for ourselves—it’s about holding space for others to choose as well. And in that space, we find the beauty of unity through authenticity.
